JANESVILLE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team salvaged one win in its Monday tripleheader at Dawson Park.
The Vikings defeated Beloit College 13-1 in the final contest of the day after losing 6-0 to Monmouth College and 11-3 to Grinnell College. The games were all that was left of the Midwest Conference Classic, which was canceled this past weekend. All of Monday's game will go down as nonconference contests.
Lawrence (5-10) got a seven-run first inning against Beloit and a solid pitching performance from Meredith Foshag to cruise to the victory.
Alex Goodson had a two-run single, and Carrie Van Groll, Carli Gurholt, and Jenna Reichel all had run-scoring singles in the first inning.
After Lawrence added a single run in the second, the Vikings scored four more times in the third. Gurholt and Hillary Cheever both had RBI singles, and Justine Garbarski walked with the bases loaded to force in the final run of the inning.
Lawrence added another run in the fourth in support of Foshag, who allowed five hits, struck out one, and didn't walk a batter.
Monmouth got all the offense it would need in the first inning against starter Catherine Marinac. The Scots scored four times in the opening inning, with Maggie Dort smacking a two-run single and Kristen Bickett following with a two-run homer.
The Scots added a pair of runs in the sixth in support of starter Sarah Christensen, who limited Lawrence to six hits. She struck out eight and walked one.
Grinnell jumped on the Vikings early, scoring three times in the first and three more times in the second. Lawrence got on the board in the top of the third when Megan Butterbrodt belted a three-run homer, her fifth of the season.
The Pioneers got those runs back and more when they scored four more times in the bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead. Grinnell then got a run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Goodson lasted only one-plus inning and gave up six runs on five hits to take the loss.
