Lawrence sweeps pair from MSOE

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team pounded out 27 hits in the nonconference doubleheader on Thursday and swept the Milwaukee School of Engineering by the scores of 8-3 and 7-2 at Whiting Field.

Alex Goodson went 3-for-4 in both games and drove in three runs to pace Lawrence (4-8). Carli Gurholt continued her torrid hitting, going 4-for-4 in the first game and 1-for-3 in the nightcap. Gurholt drove in four runs and now has 21 on the season in just 12 games.

Emily Perish went the distance for Lawrence in the opener to pick up her second win of the season. She allowed only three hits and one earned run.

Ellen French gave Lawrence a 2-1 lead in the first with a two-run double, and the Vikings led 4-1 after Gurholt and Goodson picked up run-scoring hits in the fourth.

MSOE (0-2) battled back with two runs in the fifth, but the Vikings scored four times in the sixth to seal the win. Katie Simonson, Gurholt, and Goodson all had run-scoring doubles in the inning.

Meredith Foshag went the distance in the nightcap to get the victory. She gave up six hits, struck out two, and didn't walk a batter.

The Vikings scored twice in the first, with Gurholt collecting another run-scoring single. Lawrence held a 2-1 lead after MSOE scored in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings scored five times in the sixth to seal the win.

With two on and one out, Perish doubled to drive in a run. Jenna Reichel and Simonson followed with run-scoring singles to give Lawrence a 5-1 lead. Gurholt's sacrifice fly and Goodson's RBI single completed the scoring for the Vikings.

Lawrence begins Midwest Conference play when it travels to Beloit College on Saturday.
