TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team jumped out to a big early lead and then held off a Lawrence University rally en route to a 13-9 victory Thursday.
Gustavus built an 8-1 lead after three innings before Lawrence struck for a pair of runs in the fourth. Meredith Foshag delived a run-scoring single in the inning, and Carrie Van Groll added a sacrifice fly.
The Vikings then cut the lead to 8-6 with three more runs in the fifth. Foshag provided the big blow in the inning with a two-run single.
The Gusties fought back and scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence came right back to cut the lead back to 11-9 with three more runs in the top of the sixth. The Vikings got a run-scoring double from Amanda Hauser, and Lawrence took advantage of an error and a passed ball to score two more runs in the inning.
Gustavus got two of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring.
Foshag, Hauser, Van Groll, Carli Gurholt, and Alex Goodson all had two hits for the Vikings, who outhit Gustavus 13-12. Foshag drove in three runs, and Goodson had a pair of RBIs.
Goodson pitched the first 2.1 innings and took the loss. Erin Truebenbach pitched five innings to get the win.
