Vikings fall in extra innings to Taylor

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Taylor University scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to top Lawrence University 9-8 in a nonconference game Thursday.

Megan Butterbrodt paced the Lawrence offense by going 2-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored, and four runs batted in.

Lawrence (3-6) led 8-1 after scoring twice in the second, two more times in the third, and four times in the fourth.

Butterbrodt belted a homer to lead off the top of the second, and the Vikings got two runs in the second on a pair of singles, two passed balls, an error, and a hit batsman.

Alex Goodson's double scored a run in the fourth, and Butterbrodt later blasted a three-run homer to put the Vikings up 8-1.

Taylor struck back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, with Maggie Burns providing a two-run single.

Lawrence still lead 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Vikings made two critical errors that allowed Taylor to tie the game.

The teams used the international tiebreaker, and Lawrence failed to score in the top of the eighth. Liz Lewellen's single in the bottom of the eighth scored the winning run for the Trojans.

Catherine Marinac went the distance and took the loss for Lawrence.
