Lawrence falls to Western Connecticut, Manchester

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Western Connecticut State University and then lost a 13-8 slugfest to Manchester College on Thursday.

Western Connecticut scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory after blowing a 4-1 lead. Katelyn Farrell's run-scoring double pushed across the winning run.

The Vikings scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3. Carli Gurholt had a RBI double, and Alex Goodson provided a run-scoring single in the inning.

Lawrence then tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth on Goodson's run-scoring single. Goodson and Hillary Cheever both had two hits for the Vikings.

Perish went the distance and took the loss. She gave up eight hits, struck out six, and didn't walk a batter. Meg Dargon got the win in relief.

Manchester collected 16 hits in the game, which featured 11 errors, including six by the Vikings.

Manchester jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 11-6 after five innings. Manchester sealed the win with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

Ellen French went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to pace the Vikings. Gurholt hit a three-run homer in the fourth.

Meredith Foshag pitched the first six innings and took the loss.
