CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team picked up a pair of nonconference victories on Wednesday with a 9-3 win over the University of Southern Maine and an 11-6 victory over D'Youville College.
Against Southern Maine, the Vikings had only seven hits, but Lawrence (2-4) took advantage of nine walks issued by the Huskies.
Lawrence led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when they started to break the game open. Lawrence scored three times, with Carli Gurholt doing all the damage with a three-run homer.
Southern Maine cut the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the fifth, but Lawrence put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Alex Goodson, Lara Wasserman, and Emily Perish all picked up run-scoring singles in the sixth.
Perish went the distance to earn her first collegiate victory. She struck out three and walked one.
The Vikings pounded out 16 hits and took control of the game early against D'Youville.
Goodson went 5-for-5, setting a school record for hits in a game. She also drove in three runs and scored twice. Gurholt was one RBI short of the school record as she drove in six runs with a pair of three-run homers.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first, but the Vikings scored five times in the second. Gurholt again provided the big blow, with another three-run homer. Meredith Foshag also had a run-scoring single in the inning.
Lawrence added three more runs in the third as Gurholt blasted another three-run homer. The Vikings picked up two more runs in the fifth when Goodson smacked a two-run homer.
Foshag pitched 6.1 innings to earn the victory. She struck out three and walked three.
