Vikings fall to Eastern Connecticut, Buffalo State

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team suffered a pair of nonconference shutout losses on Monday.

Eastern Connecticut State University topped the Vikings 5-0 and Buffalo State College downed Lawrence 6-0.

Eastern pitcher Molly Rathburn limited Lawrence (0-4) to only one hit, a sixth-inning double by Lara Wasserman. Rathburn, who beat No. 1-ranked UW-Whitewater on Sunday, struck out 13 and walked one.

Emily Perish matched Rathburn for the first three innings before Eastern (4-1) broke through for a run in the fourth. The Warriors added a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to seal the victory.

Rathburn also led Eastern at the plate by going 2-for-2 and driving in a run.

Buffalo State (5-1) broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning. The Bengals had only two hits in the inning but took advantage of a hit batsman, a walk, and four wild pitches.

Nicole Sabuda had two hits and drove in two runs to pace Buffalo State. The Vikings were limited to four hits by Jenna Frieling, who went the distance, striking out five and walking two, to pick up the win.
