Vikings pummel Bethel, lose heartbreaker to Union

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team split a pair of games on Friday, downing Bethel (Minn.) University 12-2 in six innings and dropping a 2-1 decision to Union (N.Y.) College.

In the nightcap, Lawrence (7-3) pounded out 13 hits and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Bethel (9-2-1). Amanda Hauser led the way by going 4-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in.

The Royals led 2-0 heading to the fourth when Alex Goodson reached on an error. Hauser followed with a two-run homer to tie the game.

Lawrence took the lead with three runs in the fifth. Meredith Foshag and Jenna Reichel singled, and Carrie Van Groll blasted a three-run homer to put the Vikings up 5-2.

The Vikings finished off Bethel with seven runs on eight hits in the sixth. Hauser started the rally with a single and scored on Molly Bouressa's triple. Megan Butterbrodt followed with a line single up the middle that got through the centerfielder's legs, and she came all the way around to score and make it 8-2.

Consecutive singles by Foshag, Reichel and pinch-hitter Hillary Cheever loaded the bases for Van Groll, who singled to drive in another run. After a ground out scored another run, Hauser completed the rally with a two-run single.

Catherine Marinac went the distance to get the win. She allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked one to improve to 5-3 on the season.

In the opener, Marinac had a perfect game going until the sixth inning. Lawrence had staked Marinac to a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Goodson homered against Tiffany Ippoliti.

The Dutchmen got a pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth to break up the no-hitter and a ground out scored a run to tie the game at 1-1. Union (1-0) won it in the seventh with a single and run-scoring double.

Marinac allowed only four hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. Ippoliti was almost as good, giving up seven hits and striking out six without issuing a walk.
