FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lawrence University softball team made short work, literally, of two teams at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Tuesday.
The Vikings (4-2) dumped Worcester State 8-0 in six innings and beat Albright College 12-4 in six innings.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Meredith Foshag picked up her first career win and shutout. She scattered four hits, struck out two and walked one to get the win.
Foshag got all the support she would need when the Vikings scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Molly Bouressa delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single in the first. Lawrence added a run in the second when Jenna Reichel reached on an error, stole second and scored on Carrie Van Groll’s single. Van Groll went 3-for-4 in the opener.
The Vikings put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Lawrence loaded and bases, and Reichel singled to score one. Toren Johnson followed with a two-run single, and Alex Goodson added another two-run single to complete the scoring.
Lawrence committed three errors in the top of the first against Albright and gave up four runs, all unearned, in the opening frame. The Vikings battled back in their half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4. Goodson belted a two-run triple, and Amanda Hauser followed with a single to score Goodson. After Molly Bouressa reached on a fielder’s choice, she later scored on a single by her sister, Lucy.
Lawrence took the lead with a run in the second and then took command of the game in the fourth. Goodson, who was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, delivered a two-run single, and Molly Bouressa later followed with a run-scoring single.
The Vikings added three more runs in the fifth, with Reichel delivering a two-run single. Van Groll gave Lawrence an 11-4 lead with a run-scoring ground ball.
The Vikings ended the game in the sixth when pinch-hitter Hillary Cheever singled to score Hauser for the eight-run margin.
Catherine Marinac picked up her third win of the season by going the distance. She allowed four hits, walked three and struck out two.
