Vikings split with Fredonia, Plymouth State

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lawrence University softball team split a pair of games Monday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Vikings (2-2) defeated SUNY-Fredonia 9-6 and dropped an 8-2 decision to Plymouth State.

In the nightcap, Lawrence pounded out 13 hits and scored in six of the seven innings to get the win against the Blue Devils (1-4). Catherine Marinac went the distance to get the win for the Vikings. She struck out two and walked two.

Lawrence jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run single from freshman Alex Goodson. After Fredonia tied it with a pair in the bottom half of the inning, but Lawrence regained the lead for good in the third.

The Vikings scored three times in the third to take a 5-2 lead. A pair of freshmen, Lucy Bouressa and Meredith Foshag, both had two-out, run-scoring singles in the inning.

Lawrence then scored single runs in each of the final four innings to seal the win. Goodson, Foshag, Carrie Van Groll and Megan Butterbrodt all had two hits for the Vikings.

In the opener, Plymouth State battered Marinac for nine hits in the first 3 2/3 innings and led 6-1 after four innings. Danielle Normand and Sammi Romano powered the Panthers’ attack, as Romano belted a homer in the second and Normand hit a three-run blast in the third.

Butterbrodt had a pair of hits and drove in a run for Lawrence, and Toren Johnson had a double and drove in the Vikings’ other run.
