Tenth-ranked Pointers top Lawrence

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Louis Hurd scored 21 points to lead the 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 72-53 nonconference win over Lawrence University Wednesday at Quandt Fieldhouse.

John Dekker scored a game-high 23 points to pace Lawrence (1-4). Tyler Cullitan added 11 points and Erik Borresen had 10.

The Pointers (4-0) led by as many as eight points in the first half before Lawrence trimmed the margin to 34-29 at the half.

Stevens Point pushed the lead to nine points early in the second half before back-to-back baskets by Cullitan, sandwiched around a Matt Moses free throw, cut the lead to 39-33 with 16:11 left.

The Pointers then started to slowly pull away. Stevens Point went on an 11-4 run, capped by Scott Hoelzel's tip-in with 10:03 left, to grab a 50-37 edge.

Lawrence battled right back, getting a layup from Jamie DeMatthew, a jumper from Dekker and a 3-pointer by Dekker to cut the margin to 50-44 with 8:13 left.

A pair of Moses free throws finally stopped the bleeding for the Pointers, who would build the lead to 15 points over the next four minutes to seal the win.

Lawrence doesn't return to action until Dec. 4 when it travels to Knox College to open Midwest Conference play.
