Titans pull away late to down Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -- The No. 24 UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team used a late run to pull away and went on to a 66-55 nonconference victory at Lawrence University's Alexander Gymnasium on Thursday.

D.J. Marsh led Oshkosh (1-1) with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Marsh hit only 5 of 20 shots from the floor but was 9 of 10 from the foul line. Cory Wittwer added 18 points for the Titans.

Tyler Crisman paced Lawrence (1-1) with 14 points. Jamie DeMatthew added 12 points and four assists, and John Dekker had 10 points.

The Titans led by 10 early in the second half before Lawrence slowly chipped away at the lead. After Marsh's layup with 14:55 left put Oshkosh up 43-34, the Vikings got layups from Erik Borresen, Jon Mays and Tyler Cullitan to cut the lead to 43-40 with 11:46 left.

Wittwer countered with a jumper for the Titans, and neither team was able to hit a field goal for the next four minutes. The Vikings got four consecutive free throws from DeMatthew, including a pair at 8:16 to cut the margin to 45-44.

Wittwer broke the scoring drought for the Titans when he buried a 3-pointer to put Oshkosh up 48-44 with 7:07 left. That started an 11-2 run for Oshkosh over the next 5:26 that gave Oshkosh a 56-46 lead and sealed the win.

The Titans won despite shooting only 36.7 percent from the floor while Lawrence was at 33.3 percent. Oshkosh won the game on the glass, outrebounding Lawrence 47-33 and grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.

Lawrence returns to action this Saturday and Sunday when it travels to Cornell College and Coe College.
