APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team put on a long-range shooting display on Saturday and rode that to a 104-90 Midwest Conference victory over rival Ripon College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence (11-12, 8-8 MWC) hit on 17 of 27 shots (63 percent) from 3-point range, including 13 of 18 (72.7 percent) in the first half. The 17 3-pointers fell one shy of tying Lawrence's game record.
John Dekker poured in 26 points and handed out five assists to pace the Vikings. Dustin Lee, who went 5-for-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, added 17 points and four assists. Jon Mays went 6-for-9 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, on his way to 16 points. Mays also had a team-high six assists.
Senior guard Yui Ueno finished his career in style with a career-high 11 points. He went 3-for-4 from the floor with all his shots coming from 3-point range. Erik Borresen added 10 points for Lawrence.
Scott Gillespie paced Ripon (15-8, 10-6) with 24 points and a game-high 10 assists. Aris Wurtz added 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Red Hawks.
Ripon led 24-23 when the Vikings took command. The Vikings hit six of their next seven shots from the floor to take a 40-30 lead with 5:13 left in the opening half.
Lawrence was up 49-36 with 1:47 left in the opening half when Dekker drained a 3-pointers. Mays followed with another 3-pointer and Lee then got a fastbreak layup to give Lawrence a 57-36 lead with 56 seconds left. After a Gillespie free throw, Ueno buried a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 60-37 lead at the half.
Lawrence made eight consecutive 3-pointers during the final 7:37 of the first half.
Ripon battled back in the second half and managed to get the lead back down to 80-67 on a pair of Matt Nelson free throws with 7:12 left. The Vikings responded by scoring the game's next six points, which included a 3-pointer by Tyler Crisman, to go up 86-67.
Ripon never got closer than the final margin of 14 points after that.
