Lake Forest hangs on to down Lawrence in overtime

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team missed several chances to knock down a game-winning shot, and Lake Forest College hung on for a 60-57 Midwest Conference overtime win Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Travis Clark paced Lake Forest (5-8, 3-3 MWC) with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Victor Campbell added 12 points for the Foresters.

Erik Borresen had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to lead Lawrence (6-6, 3-2). John Dekker added 13 points for the Vikings.

Clark's tip-in tied the game at 53-53 with 56 seconds left in regulation, but Jon Mays countered for the Vikings. Mays, who finished with nine points, scored on a driving layup to give the Vikings a 55-53 lead with 41 seconds left.

Campbell then misfired on a jumper with 21 seconds left, but the ball trickled out of bounds before the Vikings could grab it and the Foresters got the ball back. Campbell then scored on a layup with eight seconds left to tie the game at 55-55.

Dekker then missed a short jumper in the lane with a pair of Foresters draped on him that would have won it for the Vikings.

Neither team scored a field goal in the overtime but traded free throws, until Campbell's free throw with 2:46 left gave Lake Forest a 58-57 lead.

Mays then missed a jumper with 1:06 left, but Dustin Lee stole the ball from Campbell with 44 seconds left to give Lawrence another shot at the lead. Lee and Tyler Crisman both missed 3-pointers in the final 28 seconds.

The Vikings were whistled for a foul during the scramble for the rebound on the last missed 3-pointer, and Clark hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to seal the win. Lawrence missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer from 40 feet.

Lawrence returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Carroll University.
