Carroll pulls away early from Vikings

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Carroll University men's basketball team led by as many as 27 points in the first half and went on to a 78-60 Midwest Conference victory Tuesday night over Lawrence University.

John Hoch led Carroll (10-4, 5-2 MWC) with 18 points and 12 assists. John Dekker led Lawrence (6-7, 3-3) and all scorers with 25 points.

Paul Grosshuesch added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Carroll, and Kyle Jones and Eric Thompson had 14 points apiece. Erik Borresen added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Vikings.

The game was tied 7-7 when Carroll went on a 29-2 run to take a 36-9 lead with 6:50 left in the first half. Jon Mays hit a 3-pointer to stem the tide for Lawrence, and the Vikings trimmed the lead to 42-23 at the half.

Lawrence would get as close as 16 points at 59-43 on Dekker's layup with 11:58 remaining. Carroll responded with an 11-2 run to go up 70-45 with 7:39 remaining. Lawrence would get no closer than the final margin after that.

The Vikings return to action on Friday when they travel to Grinnell College.
