Late surge allows Titans to pull away from Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's basketball team used a late surge to pull away and then held off No. 19 Lawrence University to post an 84-81 nonconference win Tuesday at the Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (1-1) put together a 9-3 run in a span of just over two minutes to grab a 70-61 lead and control of the game, which was the season opener for the Vikings (0-1).

Dane Seckar-Anderson led Oshkosh and all scorers with 29 points. He was 7 of 10 from the floor and hit 15 of 20 from the foul line. Ryan Kroeger paced Lawrence with 20 points but hit only 4 of 14 shots from the floor, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range.

The Titans led 61-58 after Kroeger's layup with 6:24 left, but Oshkosh got four points from Seckar-Anderson and a 3-pointer from Cory Wittwer to help build that lead to 70-61 with 4:11 remaining.

Lawrence could get no closer than seven points in the next few minutes, and Oshkosh then built the lead to 82-69 with 52 seconds left.

The Titans hit only 2 of 6 free throws in the final 29 seconds, and Lawrence made it interesting. Dustin Lee hit a 3-pointer, Jayce Apelgren scored four consecutive points, and John Dekker nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 83-79 with eight seconds left.

After Seckar-Anderson hit a free throw, Doug Kadison got a layup with two seconds left to cut the lead to 84-81. Luke Miller turned the ball over for Oshkosh, but Lawrence couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Lee finished with 14 points and was 4 of 6 on 3-pointers. Kadison added 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Dekker led everyone with 12 rebounds to go with his nine points.

Lawrence returns to action this weekend when it hosts Coe College and Cornell College at Alexander Gymnasium.
