JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- Jayce Apelgren poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the Lawrence University men's basketball team to an 86-76 Midwest Conference win at Illinois College on Friday night.
Chris Page had a double-double for Lawrence (13-6, 9-3 MWC) with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Doug Kadison added 17 points, and Dustin Lee had 12.
Mark Gillingham paced Illinois College (8-10, 5-6) and all scorers with 29 points. Brad Johnson added 18 points and David Stewart had 14.
Lawrence led by as many as eight points in the first half, but Illinois College came back to take a 29-28 lead just before the break. Lee then buried a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 31-29 lead at the break.
Gillingham made a pair of free throws with 14:04 left in the game to tie the game at 47-47, the sixth tie of the game. Apelgren then scored the next 12 points for Lawrence as the Vikings went on a 14-0 run to take a 61-47 lead with 8:32 left. Apelgren, whose career high had been 17 points, scored 20 points in the second half.
Gilligham hit a 3-pointer to stop Lawrence's scoring outburst, but the Vikings were now in control. Lawrence led by as many as 17 points and the Blueboys would get no closer than 11 until the final seconds.
Lawrence, now tied for second place in the conference, travels to Knox College for a game Saturday afternoon.
