APPLETON, Wis. -- David Arseneault made a free throw with 0.3 seconds left to lift the Grinnell College men's basketball team to a 101-100 Midwest Conference win over Lawrence University on Friday night.
The Vikings were whistled for a foul as Arseneault drove to the basket in the final seconds with the game tied at 100-100. He missed the first free throw but made the second to give Grinnell the lead. Lawrence's John Dekker got off a desperation 3-pointer that caromed off the rim.
Bobby Long led Grinnell with 35 points, Areseneault added 16 and John Grotberg had 13. Chris Page was 14 of 15 from the floor and led Lawrence and all scorers with 37 points. Ryan Kroeger, who was 11-for-11 from the field, had 28 points. Dekker added 19 points, and Jayce Apelgren had 12.
Grinnell (9-5, 6-2 MWC) came out hot and shot 57.8 percent (26-45) in the first half. Grinnell led by as many as eight points in the first half and was up 61-56 at the half.
Lawrence (9-5, 5-2) erased that deficit early in the second half. The Vikings went on a 17-6 run to open the half, with Dekker scoring 10 points in that stretch. Lawrence's lead fluctuated between two and 10 points until the final minutes.
Lawrence led 99-92 after Kroeger converted 1 of 2 free throws with 2:00 left. Long then scored and was fouled by Drew Shaw, who also was whistled for a technical. Long made all three free throws, and Grinnell trimmed the lead to 99-97 with 1:57 left.
Dekker was fouled and also hit 1 of 2 free throws to put Lawrence up 100-97 with 1:33 left. Long then hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead to 100-98 with 1:28 left, but the Pioneers grabbed the offensive rebound. The Pioneers missed three shots before Dekker finally grabbed the rebound for Lawrence.
After a turnover by Doug Kadison with 48 seconds left, Arseneault countered with a layup with 40 seconds left to tie the game at 100-100. Dekker then missed a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to give the ball back to Grinnell and set up Arseneault's winning free throw.
Lawrence hurt itself at the line, making only 26 of 41 from the foul line.
