Lawrence routs 24th-ranked Pioneers

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team went on a 23-0 run late in the first half and routed No. 24 Carroll University 94-67 on Saturday at Van Male Fieldhouse.

John Dekker paced Lawrence (11-6, 7-3 MWC) and all scorers with 26 points. He was 9-for-13 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range.

Doug Kadison added 15 points for the Vikings, and Jayce Apelgren and Ryan Kroeger had 13 points apiece.

Josh Gould led Carroll (13-5, 9-2) with 17 points, and Wes Ladwig and Nathan Zimmerman had 12 points apiece. John Hoch, Carroll's leading scorer, did not play.

Carroll scored the first basket of the game, and Dekker followed with a 3-pointer and Lawrence never trailed again.

Carroll cut Lawrence's lead to 24-21 on a Ladwig free throw with 7:34 left in th first half when the Vikings exploded. Lawrence scored the game's next 23 points to lead 47-21 with 2:22 left before the break.

Kadison scored nine points in that stretch and Dekker had six. Carroll got off only two shots during that stretch and committed eight of its 16 turnovers in the span of 5:12.

Lawrence led 52-24 at the half, with Dekker hitting a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to cap the extraordinary first 20 minutes.

The Vikings shot 61.3 percent (19-31) in the first half and finished the game at 58.7 percent (37-63), including 48 percent (12-25) on 3-pointers..

Lawrence is now 2-0 this season against ranked opponents. The Vikings beat then No. 7 UW-Stevens Point 75-59 on Dec. 2.

Lawrence travels to No. 14 St. Norbert College on Tuesday.
