APPLETON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point hockey team scored two goals in a 21-second span in the third period to take control and go on to a 5-2 nonconference victory over Lawrence University on Saturday night.
The Pointers led 2-1 when Travis Erstad scored with 13:00 left in the game. Stevens Point then struck again just 21 seconds later on Garrett Suter's slapshot to take a 4-1 lead.
Johnny Meo, just seconds out of the penalty box, scored at the 10:56 mark to complete the scoring for the Pointers. Brad Scurfield scored late for the Vikings to cut the lead to 5-2, but Lawrence could get no closer.
Stevens Point (7-8-0) opened the scoring with a goal at the 15:56 mark of the first period. The Pointers then struck just 28 seconds into the second period on Alex Handy's goal to go up 2-0.
Marc Howe countered for Lawrence (6-4-0) with a goal 4:33 into the second period. Howe's goal gave him 101 career points, just two shy of tying the school record. The score stayed at 2-1 until the key 21-second stretch in the third period that allowed Stevens Point to take control.
Nick Graves stopped 26 shots to take the victory. Evan Johnson faced 47 shots and make 42 saves for Lawrence.
The Vikings return to action on Jan. 9 when they host Lake Forest College.
