Northland downs Lawrence to end long losing streak to Vikings

ASHLAND, Wis. -- The Northland College hockey team scored a pair of goals early in the third period to pull away for a 5-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks (4-16-1, 4-11-1 MCHA) broke a 23-game losing streak to Lawrence and snapped the Vikings' 26-game unbeaten streak in the series. Northland hadn't beaten Lawrence since a 4-3 win on Nov. 7, 2003.

Chad Moore scored twice for Northland and picked up an assist.

Billy Siers gave Lawrence (8-11-1, 7-7-1) a 1-0 lead when he scored at 8:03 of the first. Northland took control by scoring three unanswered goals in the first 11:26 of the second period. Moore scored at 5:37, Brian Zwawa scored at 11:08 and Nick Hewko added another goal just 18 seconds later.

Lawrence's Marc Howe cut the lead to 3-2 with his 17th goal of the season at 5:13 of the third. The Lumberjacks came right back and Colin McIntosh scored just 14 seconds later to give Northland a 4-2 lead.

Moore gave the Lumberjacks a 5-2 lead when he scored at the 9:11 mark of the third. Corey Garrett cut the lead back to 5-3 with his first goal of the second at the 9:57 mark, but the Vikings could get no closer.

Lawrence enjoyed a 26-20 edge in shots but went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Kyle Finch got his first win of the season and made 23 saves. Evan Johnson made 15 saves and took the loss.
