APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team scored three times in the first period and rolled to a 5-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday night at Northland College.
Marc Howe scored twice for Lawrence (8-10-1, 7-6-1 MCHA) and Evan Johnson stopped 23 shots to pick up the victory.
Mike Ackley gave Lawrence a 1-0 lead with his goal five minutes into the game. After Northland's Josh Spiegel got whistled for high sticking, the Vikings cashed in on the power play. Howe scored off an assist from Colin Smith to make it 2-0 at the 11:38 mark of the first.
After Northland's Joe Belanger got sent off for holding, Gustav Ahlberg scored on the power play for Lawrence to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead 17:50 into the first.
Nick Doiron countered for Northland on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1 just 2:37 into the second period. Howe scored just 1:22 later for Lawrence to push the lead back to 4-1.
Matt Hughes made it 5-1 with a power-play goal at the 11:25 mark of the second period. Northland rounded out the scoring with a power-play goal from Chad Moore with just 2:30 left in the final period.
Daniel McIntosh made 16 saves and took the loss for Northland (3-16-1, 3-11-1).
