APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team continued its domination of Northland College in an 8-5 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Sophomore forward Matt Hughes scored twice and freshman forward Gustav Ahlberg also scored twice to power the Lawrence offense, which scored all eight of its goals in the first half of the game.
Lawrence (5-1-0, 4-0-0 MCHA) has now defeated Northland (0-6-0, 0-5-0) 24 consecutive times, and the Vikings have won 32 of the last 33 against the Lumberjacks.
Northland jumped on the board first when Nick Hewko scored just 4:39 into the game on the power play. Sam Johnson countered for Lawrence just 1:21 later, and Marc Howe gave Lawrence the lead just 52 seconds after that. The Lumberjacks tied it at 2-2 on Chad Moore's goal at 7:16.
Lawrence took the lead for good at 9:11 of the first on Jon Sheridan's first goal of the season, and the Vikings would go on to score the game's next six goals.
Lawrence led 5-2 after the first period, and Hughes then scored two goals in a 14-second span early in the second period. Ahlberg added his second goal of the game at 11:46 of the second to put Lawrence up 8-2.
Evan Johnson came out late in the second period after giving up his fourth goal of the game. He made 16 saves and picked up the win. Michael Baldino played the rest of the game and made nine saves for the Vikings. Daniel McIntosh stopped 35 shots for the Lumberjacks.
