APPLETON, Wis. -- Marian University survived a pair of late penalties to hang on for a 4-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University Tuesday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
Lawrence (7-6-1, 6-2-1 MCHA) trailed 4-3 when Marian's Chris Thompson was whistled for tripping with 1:48 left. Marian's Todd Collins was then called for tripping with 1:33 left.
The Vikings then pulled goaltender Evan Johnson for the final 1:18 so the Vikings were skating 6 on 3 for the rest of the game. Lawrence had several scoring chances and had a goal waived off in the final 30 seconds.
Cullen Caldwell made 36 saves to get the win for Marian (8-6-0, 7-2-0). Johnson made 48 saves and took the loss.
Lawrence jumped on top when Billy Siers scored just 2:50 into the game. Marian took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals in the final 2:50 of the first period, including Thompson's goal with six seconds left in the opening period.
The Vikings evened the score at 2-2 on Matt Hughes' goal 1:15 into the second period. That tie lasted only 23 seconds when Brian Pierpont scored at 1:38 to give Marian a 3-2 lead.
Marian then took a 4-2 lead on Brendan Hull's power-play goal 4:48 into the third. The Vikings cut the lead to 4-3 on Brad Scurfield's power-play goal at 16:49 of the third.
Lawrence returns to action this weekend when it travels to Adrian College.
