APPLETON, Wis. -- Gustav Ahlberg had a pair of goals and an assist and Marc Howe set a Lawrence University record as the Vikings topped Northland College 5-3 on Saturday to win a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal playoff series.
The Vikings won the series 2-0 and advance to face top seed Adrian College next Friday in Adrian, Mich.
Howe, a senior forward, tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:57 mark of the first period with a power-play goal. It was Howe's 19th goal of the season and broke the previous record of 18, which was held by Nick Jennette, Joe Searl and Danny Schroder.
Ahlberg picked up his first goal of the day when he scored off a pass by Masa Takahashi at the 12:56 mark of the second to put Lawrence up 2-1. Billy Siers made it 3-1 when he took a pass from Ahlberg and scored at the 17:31 mark of the second.
Lawrence's Sam Johnson scored on the power play at 7:52 of the third to put the Vikings up 4-1. Chad Moore quickly countered for Northland (5-21-1) when he scored just 38 seconds later to trim the margin to 4-2.
Ahlberg sealed the win for Lawrence with a goal, again off a pass from Takahashi, at the 15:32 mark of the third period to give the Vikings a 5-2 edge. Moore scored on the power play with just 35 seconds left to complete a hat trick.
Evan Johnson made 20 saves to pick up the win for Lawrence. Daniel McIntosh took the loss and stopped 41 shots. Lawrence had a 46-23 edge in shots.
