Big second period leads Lake Forest past Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lake Forest College hockey team scored four second-period goals to take command of the game and went on to a 6-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lake Forest (4-8-0, 4-4-0 MCHA) scored four times in the second period, including two goals by Justin Taylor in the final 4:20 of the period, to break a scoreless tie. Lake Forest won despite being outshot 40-23.

Freshman defenseman Colin Smith scored his first career goal for the Vikings, and Ben DiMarco also scored for Lawrence (6-5-0, 5-1-0), who lost for the first time in conference play.

Lawrence cut the lead in half on Smith's goal at 10:09 mark, but Taylor scored at 15:40 and again at 18:31 to give Lake Forest a 4-1 lead after two periods.

DiMarco gave the Vikings new life when he scored just 4:32 into the third period to trim the lead to 4-2.

The decisive score came when Lake Forest's Marc Rubino was sent off for interference at 11:49. The Vikings pulled goaltender Michael Baldino for an extra attacker on the power play, but Lake Forest's Mike Rubino was able to score an empty-net short-handed goal to give Lake Forest a 5-2 lead.

Marc Rubino finished the scoring with a tally at the 18:05 mark.
