Vikings, Finlandia skate to 2-2 overtime tie

HANCOCK, Mich. -- The Lawrence University hockey team killed off a pair of late penalties to preserve a 2-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association overtime tie with Finlandia University Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Gustav Ahlberg scored both goals for Lawrence (8-15-2, 7-11-2 MCHA), and Masa Takahashi and Billy Siers assisted on both goals.

Lawrence led 1-0 on Ahlberg's goal 3:14 into the second period, and Finlandia (5-17-3, 4-14-2) tied it up on Brandon VanAcker's power-play goal at 11:48.

The Vikings jumped back ahead 2-1 just 57 seconds later when Ahlberg scored again. The score remained that way until Eric Schultz scored at 15:29 of the third to tie it at 2-2.

Lawrence then had to survive a pair of late penalties. Corey Garrett was whistled for interference with 2:24 left. Lawrence's Jon Sheridan then was called for a five-minute checking from behind penalty with 1:08 left in regulation.

The Vikings killed off the ensuing two-man advantage to reach the overtime. Finlandia was still on the power play in the overtime, but the Lions' James Brey was called for called just 1:05 into the extra session to negate the advantage.

Lawrence managed four shots on goal in the overtime, and Finlandia had three. Lawrence had a 34-32 edge in shots on the game.

Michael Baldino made 30 saves for Lawrence, and Ryan Donovan had 32 for the Lions.

Lawrence returns home next weekend to host a two-game MCHA quarterfinal playoff series with Northland College.
