Lawrence shuts out Golden Eagles

APPLETON, Wis. -- Evan Johnson posted his second consecutive shutout, and the Lawrence University hockey team downed the University of Minnesota-Crookston 5-0 in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Johnson, a sophomore goaltender, made 17 saves to pick up the victory. He stopped 30 shots last Saturday in a 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Johnson ran his scoreless streak to 120 minutes and earned his third career shutout.

The Vikings got on the board midway through the first period when Matt Jacobs scored off assists from Josh DeSmit and Jon Bellotti. Nick Jennette made it 2-0 with only 2:48 left in the first period when he scored on the power play off an assist from Corey Garrett.

The Vikings put the game away with two more goals in the second period. Garrett's power-play goal 14:24 into the second period was followed by Marc Howe's goal on the man-advantage just 2:53 later to give Lawrence a 4-0 edge.

Hughes, a freshman foward, added Lawrence's final goal midway through the third period.

Lawrence (2-4-0, 2-3-0 MCHA) outshot Crookston (1-6-0, 1-4-0) 56-17, and Bryan Dalbec stopped 51 shots for the Golden Eagles.

The teams wrap up the two-game series Saturday afternoon.
