Lawrence pulls out win in final second

HANCOCK, Mich. -- The Lawrence University hockey team waited until the last second, literally, to beat Finlandia University on Saturday.

Josh DeSmit's goal with 0.7 seconds left in overtime lifted Lawrence to a 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association win, and the Vikings (7-7-0, 7-3-0 MCHA) swept the weekend series in the process.

DeSmit scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals, and they were his first two tallies of the season.

Finlandia (6-7-0, 6-4-0) grabbed a 2-0 when the Lions scored twice in the first five minutes of the second period.

The Vikings cut the lead in half just 1:07 into the third period when Marc Howe took a pass from Matt Jacobs and beat goaltender Mike Wuthrich. Lawrence then tied the game on DeSmit's first goal of the season with 6:19 remaining.

DeSmit then scored the game-winner with less than a second left on Lawrence's second shot of the overtime. Jameson Raymond got his second assist of the day, and Corey Garrett also picked up an assist on the game-winner.

Evan Johnson made 22 saves to pick up the win and improve to 7-5-0 on the season.

Lawrence returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it has a home-and-home series with Concordia (Wis.) University.
