Vikings complete sweep of Concordia

MEQUON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team scored the game's first three goals and later picked up a pair of short-handed goals in a 6-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Concordia University of Wisconsin Saturday night.

The Vikings (9-7-0, 9-3-0 MCHA) swept the weekend series and ran their win streak to six games. Lawrence also has won a school-record nine games.

Pat Brenner gave the Vikings a lead they wouldn't relinquish when he scored his first goal of the season with only 34 seconds left in the opening period for a 1-0 Lawrence advantage.

The Vikings made it 2-0 only 51 seconds into the second period on Masa Takahashi's third goal of the season. Takahashi then assisted on Matt Hughes' goal midway through the second period and Lawrence led 3-0.

Concordia had a two-man advantage when Jonathan Smith scored at 15:26 of the second to trim the lead to 3-1.

Nick Jennette then scored a short-handed goal 45 seconds later to put Lawrence up 4-1. The Falcons battled back as Andy Meyer and Smith scored at 17:42 and 18:50, respectively, to cut Lawrence's lead to 4-3.

Marc Howe then gave the Vikings a big lift when he scored off a pass from Jennette with only five seconds left in the second period to put Lawrence up 5-3.

Howe then scored a short-handed goal, also on a pass from Jennette, just 3:16 into the third period to complete the scoring.

Evan Johnson made 29 saves to pick up the win for Lawrence. Eric Everson made 42 saves and took the loss. Lawrence piled up a 48-32 edge in shots on the night.
