Vikings battle back to beat Concordia

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team battled back from a pair of deficits to beat Concordia University of Wisconsin 5-3 in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence trailed 1-0 after the first period, came back to take a 2-1 lead and then trailed 3-2 after two periods before rallying for three goals in the third. Lawrence has now won five straight and ran its MCHA winning streak to a school-record eight games.

NIck Jennette scored twice for Lawrence (8-7-0, 8-3-0 MCHA), and he assisted on Matt Jacobs' empty-net goal that sealed the victory.

Sam Aide scored at 12:18 of the first to give Concordia (3-13-1, 3-9-0) a 1-0 lead after one period despite the fact Lawrence outshot the Falcons 18-5 in the first period. Lawrence had a 54-13 shot edge for the game.

Jennette tied it at 7:08 of the second period on a power-play goal after Niclas Soderberg got sent off for hooking just eight seconds earlier. After Josh Farnam's penalty for interference, Masa Takahashi scored on the power play at 9:23 to put Lawrence up 2-1.

Concordia came back to score just 18 seconds later on Soderberg's goal to tie it at 2-2. Christopher Thiess then gave Concordia a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at 18:23 of the second.

Matt Hughes tied it at 3-3 with his goal just 1:06 into the third period. The Vikings then grabbed a 4-3 lead on Jennette's goal at 3:14 of the third.

The Falcons pulled goaltender Eric Everson with 1:05 left in the game, and Jacobs sealed the win with the empty-net goal with 26 seconds left.

Everson made 49 saves for the Falcons, and Evan Johnson made 10 saves to pick up the win for Lawrence.
