Adrian shuts out Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. -- Special teams were the difference Friday night, as the Adrian College hockey team scored a pair of power-play goals and a short-hander on its way to beating Lawrence University 5-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association opener at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

The Bulldogs (3-1-1, 1-0-0 MCHA) got a power-play goal from Shawn Skelly 4:22 into the opening period to take the lead, and Eric Miller's short-hander at 12:49 of the first put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Adrian made it 3-0 on Kyle Frieday's goal at with just over five minutes left in the opening period.

The score remained 3-0 until Jeremy Klaver scored a 4-on-4 goal just 1:18 into the third. Quinn Waller's power-play goal with only 58 seconds left in the game finished the scoring.

Brad Fogel made 27 saves to pick up the shutout for Adrian, which piled up 42 shots against Lawrence goaltender Evan Johnson.

The game saw 39 penalties (20 against Adrian, 19 against Lawrence) called and a combined 135 penalty minutes. Three players, Adrian's Mike Towns and Riley Hughes and Lawrence's Billy Siers, received game disqualifications for fighting and will miss Saturday's game.

Adrian, which won the MCHA title last season, goes for the series sweep Saturday afternoon.
