WINONA, Minn. -- The St. Mary's University hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and went on to a 5-1 nonconference win over Lawrence University on Saturday night.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, St. Mary's jumped on the Vikings early by scoring twice in the first 5:13. Adam Gill gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead when he scored at the 2:50 mark, and David Gross made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 5:13. The Cardinals (5-5-2) made it a 3-0 at the 11-minute mark when Gill got his second goal of the night and his first power-play goal of the evening.
Lawrence freshman goaltender Evan Johnson gave way to another freshman netminder, Riley Stank, after the Cardinals' third goal of the first period. Stank finished with 34 saves and allowed a pair of goals.
Lawrence (3-8-1) got its lone goal of the game when Mike Ackley scored on the power play at 8:04 of the second off assists from Josh Peterson and Masa Takahashi.
The Cardinals pumped the lead back to 4-1 when Gross got his second power-play goal of the game with 2:22 left in the second period. The Cardinals added another power-play goal when Jeff Miller scored with 2:26 left in the final period.
Mike Soulen and Dan Smith combined for 23 saves for the Cardinals.
Lawrence returns to Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association action when it hosts Finlandia University next Friday and Saturday.
