ASHLAND, Wis. -- Marc Howe scored a pair of short-handed goals, as the Lawrence University hockey team shut out Northland College 5-0 in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday at the Bay Area Civic Center.
Lawrence (9-11-3, 9-8-1 MCHA) outshot the Lumberjacks (3-20-0, 3-15-0) 59-9, and Evan Johnson posted his first career shutout for the Vikings.
Howe gave Lawrence all the offense it would need when he scored a short-handed goal with 2:16 left in the first period. After Northland's Chad Moore was called for slashing with 44 seconds left in the opening period, Masa Takahashi made the Lumberjacks pay. He scored a power-play just 16 seconds into the man-advantage and Lawrence led 2-0 after one period.
Pat Brenner made it 3-0 on his even-strength goal midway through the second period. Howe then scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 12:48 of the second to give the Vikings a 4-0 edge. Josh DeSmit finished the scoring with 2:45 left in the second period with a power-play goal for Lawrence.
The Vikings converted on only 2 of 12 power-play chances, while Northland was 0 of 5.
Northland goaltender Adam Gorecki was pulled midway through the second period and took the loss.
Lawrence wraps up the regular season next weekend when it travels to Finlandia University for a two-game series.
