Vikings fall to MSOE in playoff opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A short-handed goal in the final five minutes Saturday night helped the Milwaukee School of Engineering hockey team seal a 3-1 victory over Lawrence University at the Kern Center.

The game was the opener of the two-game Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinals. The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon.

MSOE (14-12-0) got on the board early in the second period on Michael Soik's short-handed goal. Soik made it 2-0 6:23 into the third period on an even-strength goal.

Larwence (10-13-3) finally got on the board when Matt Jacobs scored on the power play at 11:02 of the third. Lawrence, which outshot the Raiders 34-28, was only 1-for-12 on the power play.

After Michael Jantzi got sent off for elbowing at 13:35 to give Lawrence another power-play opportunity, Steve Smiddy sealed the win for the Raiders with a short-handed goal at 15:30.

Chris Keller made 33 saves for MSOE, and Evan Johnson stopped 25 shots for the Vikings.
