Lawrence, Marian skate to 4-4 tie

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team could not hold onto a third-period lead, and Marian College salvaged a 4-4 overtime tie with the Vikings in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence (5-11-3, 5-8-1 MCHA) got two goals apiece from sophomore Marc Howe and freshman Josh DeSmit. Marian (12-6-1, 11-2-1) got a goal midway through the third period to force the overtime.

The teams traded power-play goals in the first period, as Carl Bresser scored at 6:47 to put Marian up 1-0. DeSmit countered for the Vikings at 12:24, but Marian's James Goodfellow scored less than a minute later and the Sabres took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Howe scored off a pass from Corey Garrett to tie the game at 2-2 just 2:45 into the second period. Marian went up 3-2 on Josh McAndrew's goal just 37 seconds later.

When Marian's Ryan Hitchcock got sent off for hooking, the Vikings made Marian pay. DeSmit's power-play goal tied the game at 3-3 at 9:01. Kyle Rasmussen took a slashing penalty near the end of the second period, and Lawrence cashed in early in the third. Howe scored on the power play just 34 seconds into the third to put Lawrence up 4-3.

The Sabres got the equalizer at 11:06 when Jeffrey Wills' shot was screened from Lawrence goaltender Evan Johnson and found the back of the net.

Both teams had good scoring chances near the end of the third period, and Lawrence had a power play for the final 58 seconds of overtime but wasn't able to score.

Johnson made 37 saves for Lawrence, and Cullen Caldwell stopped 26 shots for the Sabres.
