Lawrence knocks off Finlandia

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team scored the game's first four goals and then withstood a Finlandia University rally to earn a 5-3 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

Lawrence (4-8-1, 4-5-0 MCHA) went 3-for-6 on the power play and picked up a short-handed goal. Finlandia (7-5-2, 6-3-0) scored three consecutive power-play goals in the second period, but Lawrence sealed the win with an even-strength goal midway through the third period.

Corey Garrett's short-handed goal, the first tally of his career, 7:20 into the first period gave Lawrence a 1-0 lead. The Vikings made it 2-0 on Masa Takahashi's power-play goal at 16:22 of the first period.

Lawrence sent Finlandia goalie Ryan Donovan to the showers after Josh DeSmit's power-play goal just 21 seconds into the second period put the Vikings up 3-0. The Vikings struck again at 5:00 on Nick Jennette's power-play goal.

The Lions stormed back with three power-play goals in a span of 8:22 in the second period. Joe Beaudry capped the outburst at 15:24 and cut Lawrence's lead to 4-3.

Freshman Pat Brenner scored his first collegiate goal midway through the final period off an assist from Matt Jacobs to put the Vikings up 5-3.

Jim Ryan made 32 saves to push his record to 5-4-0 on the season. Donovan finished with six saves, and Lukas Alberer made 15 in relief.
