Lawrence doubles up Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University hockey team fired a school-record 73 shots on goal and routed Concordia University of Wisconsin Saturday night in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

Matt Jacobs scored a pair of goals, and Josh Peterson and Josh DeSmit both had a goal and two assists for Lawrence (5-10-1, 5-7-0 MCHA). The 73 shots breaks the record of 69 set against Illinois Benedictine on Jan. 29, 1999. Michael Turbitt scored twice for Concordia (2-15-0, 2-10-0).

The game was tied 3-3 after the first period, with Peterson, Masa Takahashi, and Nick Jennette all scoring for Lawrence, as the Vikings wnet 3-for-3 on the power play in the opening 20 minutes.

The Vikings took command in the second period by scoring three times, with all of the goals coming on special teams. Mike Ackely and Marc Howe scored on the power play to give Lawrence a 5-3 lead. Jacobs then got a short-handed goals at 16:21, and that proved to be the game-winner.

Concordia cut the lead to 5-4 on Cory Kopas' goal at 5:23 of the third, but Neil Wallace countered for Lawrence just 13 seconds later. The Vikings then added goals by Aaron LaFave at 14:16 and DeSmit at 18:59.

Jim Ryan made 11 saves to pick up the win in relief. Alexander Koeppen made 63 saves for Concordia.
