APPLETON, Wis. -- Grinnell College scored 17 points in a span of less than six minutes in the third quarter to take control of Saturday's Midwest Conference game at Lawrence University, and the Pioneers went on to a 32-16 victory at the Banta Bowl.
Grinnell (2-2, 1-2 MWC) scored on its first possession of the second half, with Mike Bogard hitting Joey Snyder on a 23-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-down play to give the Pioneers a 15-8 lead.
After Lawrence quarterback Nick Maxam threw one of his six interceptions on the afternoon, Grinnell took over on the ensuing possession at the Lawrence 17. The Lawrence defense stiffened and forced Scott Koenning to kick a 24-yard field goal for an 18-8 Grinnell lead.
Maxam threw picks on each of the next two Lawrence possessions, with the second one returned 37 yards for a touchdown by Ryan Boehm to give Grinnell a 25-8 lead with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Maxam was 12 of 25 passing for 117 yards.
Grinnell capped its scoring when Bogard ran 34 yards for a touchdown with 12:34 left in the game to complete a four-play, 69-yard drive. Bogard, who ran 19 times for 56 yards, also completed 17 of 32 passes for 221 yards.
Lawrence (0-3, 0-3) got its lone touchdown of the second half when freshman quarterback Eric Bohling hit Craig Ebert with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 6:23 left in the game. It was Bohling's first career touchdown pass.
The Vikings took an early lead when Lawrence marched 64 yards in 10 plays for the first score of the game. Maxam connected with wide receiver Derek Micke for a 19-yard touchdown pass to put Lawrence up 8-0 with 7:46 left in the opening quarter.
Grinnell answered the next possession when the Pioneers 57 yards in 10 plays for the tying touchdown. Bogard ran it from two yards out and ran in the two-point conversion.
Lawrence looks for its first win of the season when it travels to Illinois College next Saturday.
