LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Lake Forest College football team jumped out to a 14-0 lead and employed a bend-but-don't-break defense to record a 30-19 Midwest Conference win Saturday over Lawrence University at Farwell Field.
Brock Stenberg rushed 21 times for 99 yards, and quarterback Jeff Ziemnik completed 14 of 25 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Dan Carter also threw a touchdown pass for the Foresters.
Lake Forest (2-4, 2-3 MWC) got on the board midway through the first quarter when Carter connected with Tom Cirone for a 34-yard touchdown pass. The Foresters made it 14-0 early in the second quarter when Joe Plano's 3-yard touchdown run capped a 10-play drive.
Quarterback Eric Aspenson, who ran 14 times for 79 yards, ripped off a 47-yard scoring run with 11:53 left in the first half, as Lawrence (1-4, 1-4) cut the lead to 14-7. The Foresters came right back, as Carter caught a 30-yard scoring pass from Ziemnik to go up 20-7.
Lawrence drove deep into Lake Forest territory just before the half but had to settle for Bryan Althouse's 33-yard field goal that trimmed the lead to 20-10.
The Vikings again drove deep into Foresters territory at the end of the third quarter, but the drive stalled again, and Althouse hit a 27-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 20-13.
The Foresters then scored the game's next 10 points to seal the victory. Lawrence got a late touchdown catch from Matt Hintz for the final margin.
Lawrence returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Knox College in the Banta Bowl.
