Vikings end season with split at UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team finished its season with a split of a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday at UW-Whitewater.

The Vikings took the opener 12-6 and Whitewater won the nightcap 19-2. Lawrence finishes its season with a 12-21 record.

In the opener, Lawrence led 7-6 after six innings and pulled away in the final three frames. Luke Kostreva picked up the win by tossing seven innings. Brad Hauser worked the final two innings to pick up his third save of the season.

Tim O'Toole went 4-for-6 with a pair of homers in the opener, and Tommy Schmidt was 2-for-5 with a homer and five runs batted in.

The game was tied 2-2 heading to the fourth when the Vikings struck for three runs. O'Toole's two-run homer was the big blow in the frame.

Lawrence expanded a 5-3 lead in the sixth with two more runs, both scoring on Schmidt's two-run single. Whitewater countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 7-6, but that's as close as the Warhawks would get.

Billy Bodle's run-scoring single in the seventh put the Vikings up 8-6, and Lawrence then struck for three more runs in the eighth. Schmidt blasted a two-run homer in the frame, and Frank Forseth had a run-scoring single.

O'Toole socked a solo homer in the ninth to finish the scoring for Lawrence.

It was all Warhawks in the nightcap as they pounded out 16 hits against six Lawrence pitchers.
