Vikings end season with doubleheader split at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team wrapped up its season Tuesday with a Midwest Conference doubleheader split at Carroll College.

Lawrence won the opener 13-5, and Carroll rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the nightcap 18-17.

In the opener, Andy Frelich went the distance to even his record at 3-3 on the season. He allowed 10 hits, struck out four and walked two.

Lawrence (11-18, 5-11 MWC) pulled away early with nine runs in the first three innings. The Vikings led 2-1 when they scored five times in the second. Wes Otte's two-run double was the key hit in the inning. Lawrence added two more runs in the third, as Otte delivered another run-scoring double. He finished 3-for-6 in the opener with three runs batted in.

Ben Konetzke was 3-for-5 in the first game, and Adam Fritsch, Doug McEneaney, and Robert Rashid had two hits apiece. Fritsch, who hit a two-run homer in the eighth, finished with four RBIs.

In the nightcap, Lawrence trailed 11-4 after three innings before rallying. Lawrence got two runs back in the fourth on Matt Frelich's first career home run. Lawrence cut the lead to 12-8 with two more runs in the fifth, with Hawk Haiduke providing a run-scoring double.

Lawrence took the lead with seven runs in the sixth. Frank Forseth provided a bases-clearing three-run double, and McEneaney had a two-run single to key the inning and give Lawrence a 15-12 lead.

Lawrence led 17-13 after Tommy Schmidt and Tim Salm hit back-to-back homers in the eighth. Carroll (10-21, 5-11) got those two runs back in the bottom of the eighth, and then won it with three runs in the ninth. Andy Sturtevant capped the rally in the ninth with a run-scoring single.

Schmidt finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs in the nightcap. Fritsch and Forseth also picked up three hits apiece. Otte, Salm, and Haiduke all had two hits.
