Vikings split pair of slugfests with Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team wrapped up the Midwest Conference season by splitting a pair of slugests against Carroll College at Frame Park on Saturday.

The Vikings (11-20, 6-10 MWC) won the opener 15-14 and Carroll (8-24, 2-14) took the nightcap 19-18.

In the opener, Hawk Haiduke went 5-for-6 with four runs batted in and belted a grand slam in the second game. Ben Webster was 4-for-5 with six RBIs to pace Lawrence's 21-hit attack in the first game.

Lawrence trailed 14-7 in the top of the eighth when the Vikings exploded for six runs. Webster hit a two-run homer, and Haiduke followed with a three-run blast three batters later to cut the lead to 14-12. Frank Forseth then hit his second career homer in as many games to trim the margin to 14-13.

The Vikings got the winning rally started in the top of the ninth on Tim O'Toole's double. Webster singled to score O'Toole and tie the game at 14-14. Brad Hauser followed with a run-scoring double to put the Vikings ahead.

Hauser then worked a scoreless ninth in relief of winner Josh Richie (1-3) to pick up his second save of the season.

Lawrence trailed 14-6 in the second game before breaking out for nine runs in the top of the sixth. Tommy Schmidt's RBI double scored the first run of the inning for the Vikings, and Haiduke then smacked his first career grand slam to cut the lead to 14-11.

Lawrence wasn't done yet, as the Vikings scored two more runs on an error. Billy Bodle picked up a run-scoring double, and Schmidt followed with a RBI single to finish the scoring and give Lawrence a 15-14 lead.

Carroll scored four times in the bottom of the inning to go up 18-15, but the Vikings tied the game in the top of the eighth.

Webster and Doug McEneaney both singled, and Schmidt delivered a three-run homer to tie the score at 18-18. Schmidt was 5-for-5 with six RBIs in the second game.

The Pioneers then won it on Ryan Morrison's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

Lawrence wraps up its season Tuesday when it travels to UW-Whitewater for a nonconference doubleheader.
