Vikings drop two to St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College baseball team pulled away late to win the opener and then pulled out a victory in the nightcap to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Saturday.

St. Norbert (21-11, 12-4 MWC) won the first game 17-7 in eight innings and took the nightcap 7-6 in 10 innings. Lawrence finishes its season with a 12-20 record (5-11 MWC).

St. Norbert jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener, but the Vikings countered with four runs in the third. Eric Bohling, who went 3-for-3 in the first game, belted a two-run double. Luke Kostreva had a run-scoring double, and Hawk Haiduke had a RBI single.

Lawrence then trailed 7-4 when it tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth. Kostreva doubled and scored in the inning, and Matt Hughes had a run-scoring single.

St. Norbert took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then sealed the victory with two runs in the sixth and five more in the eighth.

Lawrence trailed 4-1 in the nightcap when the Vikings tied the score in the top of the eighth. The big blow in the inning was Haiduke's two-run single.

The Vikings then grabbed a 6-4 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. Lawrence loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batsman. Tony Jandron then walked Robert Rashid to force in a run to give Lawrence a 5-4 lead. Jandron then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Hughes to score and give Lawrence a 6-4 lead.

The Green Knights rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, and then won it in the bottom of the 10th when Brett Birkholtz singled, went to third on a double, and scored on a ground out.

Rashid, Haiduke, and Frank Forseth all had two hits for the Vikings in the nightcap.
