Lawrence loses two to St. Norbert

APPLETON, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College baseball team posted a 7-2 win in the opener and then rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap to sweep a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University at Don Hawkins Field on Thursday night.

In the opener, Cody Woods went the distance to pick up his first victory of the season. He allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two. Brett Birkholz, Garrick Fisher, and Cory Fuller all had two hits in the opener for St. Norbert (19-11, 10-4 MWC).

Jordan Clark had two hits in the first game for Lawrence (12-18, 5-9). Alex Fritsch allowed six hits over six innings and took the loss for Lawrence.

Lawrence grabbed a 4-3 lead in the nightcap by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ray Tucker and Hawk Haiduke singled before Wes Otte smacked a two-run triple for the Vikings.

The Green Knights got a lead-off double from Jared Yost, who went 3-for-5, in the eighth. Jandron was the next hitter, and Otte was tracking down his fly ball in deep center field when Otte leaped and crashed into the wall. The ball popped out of Otte's glove right near the top of the fence and went for a two-run homer.

The Vikings threatened in the ninth and had runners at first and second with one out. Jandron got Jameson Raymond to hit into a game-ending double play to pick up the save.

Jordan Vater had 2.1 innings of hitless relief to pick up the win. Ben Konetzke went eight innings, allowing nine hits while striking out four and walking two, and took the loss.

The teams meet again Saturday at St. Norbert to wrap up the four-game series.
