APPLETON, Wis. -- The Beloit College baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Wednesday by the scores of 4-3 and 7-3 at Don Hawkins Field.
Beloit (24-7, 11-5 MWC) worked out of a pair of late jams to hang on for the win in the opener, and the Bucs pulled away late to take game two.
In the opener, Hunter Nelson paced Beloit by going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Robert Rashid and Frank Forseth had two hits apiece to pace Lawrence (12-16, 5-7) in game one.
The Bucs built a 4-1 lead before Lawrence rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Bohling's two-run single slashed the lead to 4-3 with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved Bohling into scoring position, but reliever Mike Kovach got two groundouts to end the threat.
The Vikings had runners at first and second with one out in the eighth, but reliever Chris Welborn got a foulout and a strikeout to get out of the jam. Welborn worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save.
Rick Krajewski pitched six innings to earn the win. Frelich pitched the first two innings and took the loss.
Jordan DeGeorge allowed only one hit over six innings and got the win in the nightcap.
Beloit led 3-0 in the nightcap before Lawrence cut the margin to 3-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Frelich belted a solo homer for Lawrence in the fifth.
The Bucs made it 4-2 with a run in the top of the seventh, but Jameson Raymond's RBI single cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning.
Beloit then scored three times in the eighth, with Drew Oswald hitting a homer to lead off the inning, to lead 7-3.
Welborn allowed four hits over the final three innings to get his ninth save of the season. Forseth worked 7.1 innings and took the loss, his first of the season.
Kovach went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs to pace Beloit in game two. Raymond had a pair of hits for Lawrence.
