DE PERE, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College baseball team held off Lawrence University in the opening game of a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Sunday and then posted a shutout in the nightcap for the sweep.
St. Norbert won the first game 11-9 and took the nightcap 10-0.
In the opener, Lawrence (8-15, 4-8 MWC) led 2-1 in the second after Robert Rashid's two-run double and then built a 6-4 lead after scoring four times in the fifth. Doug McEneaney and Adam Fritsch both had run-scoring doubles in the fifth, and Tommy Schmidt added a RBI single.
The Green Knights rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Jared Yost's two-run homer. Yost, who had hit a solo shot in the fourth, keyed a four-run rally in the sixth with another two-run homer. St. Norbert added another run in the seventh to lead 11-7.
Schmidt blasted a two-run homer in the ninth to cut the lead to 11-9, but that's as close as the Vikings would get.
Fritsch went 3-for-5 for Lawrence in the opener, and Schmidt, McEneaney, Rashid, and Wes Otte had two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Trevin Hillesheim went the distance, striking out seven and walking two while allowing only two hits to get the win.
St. Norbert sealed the win with a six-run sixth inning. Cory Fuller went 4-for-4 to pace St. Norbert (20-7, 10-2).
Lawrence returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College in a nonconference doubleheader.
