Vikings rally for split with St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth inning to win the nightcap of a Midwest Conference doubleheader at St. Norbert College on Sunday.

The Vikings took the second game 8-5 after dropping the opener 16-6.

Lawrence (6-15, 1-5 MWC) trailed 5-2 heading into the last inning, but Hawk Haiduke reached on an error to start the rally. Brad Hauser, who was 4-for-4 in the nightcap, followed with a two-run homer off reliever Jordan Vater to trim the lead to 5-4. The Vikings then loaded the bases on a hit batsman and bunt singles by Matt Frelich and Tim O'Toole. After a pop up, Vater walked Ben Webster to force in a run and tie the game at 5-5.

Trevin Hillesheim came on in relief of Vater and balked to force in Frelich and give Lawrence a 6-5 lead. After Sam Laes reached on an error, Tim Salm belted a two-run double to put Lawrence up 8-6.

Lawrence starter Kevin Kangas worked around a lead-off single by Brian Perszyk to secure the win. Kangas struck out five and walked one to pick up his second win of the season.

Lawrence led 2-0 in the opener after Tommy Schmidt capped a two-run rally in the second with a RBI single. St. Norbert (17-5-1, 7-1) jumped on Lawrence starter Chris Clouthier in the bottom of the second and scored five times on six hits, including run-scoring doubles from Teddy Fleming and Adam Frost.

Frost had another two-run double in the third to give St. Norbert a 7-2 lead. The Green Knights scored two more in the fifth, as Frost picked up yet another run-scoring double.

Lawrence trimmed the lead to 9-5 in the sixth with three runs. Laes singled to score Webster, and Schmidt followed with a two-run homer.

St. Norbert countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 11-5, and the Vikings added a run in the top of the seventh. St. Norbert then scored five times off reliever Kevin Penza in the bottom of the seventh to end the game on the 10-run rule. Tony Jandron had a two-run single, and Fleming picked up a RBI double in the inning.

Lawrence returns to action Monday when it will complete a doubleheader with Beloit College that was suspended by snow back on April 9. The first pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. at Don Hawkins Field.
