Konetzke's three-hit shutout lifts Lawrence to sweep of Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. -- Freshman pitcher Ben Konetzke tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap, as the Lawrence University baseball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Beloit College Monday at Pohlman Field.

Lawrence (7-12, 3-5 MWC) got a complete-game pitching performance from Frank Forseth in the opener, a 13-4 victory, and Konetzke led the Vikings to a 5-0 win in the second game.

Konetzke improved to 2-0 on the season, as he allowed singles in the second and third and a double in the sixth. Konetzke, who struck out five and walked four, allowed only two runners as far as third base.

The Vikings, who took three of four in the series with the Bucs (15-12, 4-8), jumped on Beloit starter Jordan DeGeorge with a pair of runs in the first. Tommy Schmidt, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in in the second game, delivered a two-run double in the inning.

Lawrence doubled that lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the sixth. Ben Webster tripled and then scored on Tim Salm's sacrifice fly. Schmidt followed with a solo homer to put Lawrence up 4-0.

The Vikings added a run in the seventh when Andy Bremberger singled, went to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch.

In the opener, Forseth allowed 15 hits, but he walked only one and stranded 11 Beloit runners.

Schmidt again provided the offense, as he went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Robert Rashid had a pair of hits for the Vikings, and Hawk Haiduke and Adam Fritsch both scored three times. Fritsch also had three RBIs.

Beloit led 1-0 when the Vikings struck for three runs in the second on only one hit. A error on pitcher Ryan Schmitz allowed three runs to score and the Vikings led 3-1.

Lawrence added a run-scoring single by Schmidt in the third and a RBI double by Wes Otte in the fourth and were up 5-3 heading to the seventh.

Schmidt started the rally in the seventh with a run-scoring single, and Fritsch then belted a three-run homer to put the Vikings up 9-3.

The Vikings added four more runs in the ninth, highlighted by Ray Tucker's two-run single.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to St. Norbert College for a conference doubleheader.
