St. Norbert sweeps Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. -- The St. Norbert College baseball team rallied for a win in the nightcap to complete a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep at Lawrence University on Saturday.

The Green Knights won 9-4 and 11-10 to move to 6-0 in the conference and 16-4-1 overall. Lawrence falls to 5-14 and 0-4 in the league.

Lawrence led the nightcap 8-6 heading to the top of the eighth inning when St. Norbert got a walk and single. That was it for Lawrence starter Josh Richie, and Adam Frost greeted reliever Andy Frelich with a wind-aided three-run homer to put the Green Knights up 9-8.

St. Norbert added two more runs in the ninth with the help of three hits and an error. Lawrence rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Hawk Haiduke belted a two-run homer to trim St. Norbert's lead to 11-10. Ben Webster followed with a single to put the tying run aboard, but pinch-hitter Matt Frelich flied out to deep centerfield to end the game.

Trevin Hillesheim pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to move to 2-0 on the season. Richie falls to 0-3.

In the opener, the Vikings started with a bang, as Tim O'Toole and Webster both hit solo homers in the bottom of the first to give Lawrence a 2-0 lead.

The Green Knights scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead and then added three more in the sixth to go up 7-3. Lawrence countered with a run in the seventh, but St. Norbert put the game away with two run in the top of the ninth.

Alex Byrne recovered from the two homers in the first inning to work 7 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed 12 hits, as the Vikings outhit the Green Knights 13-12 in the contest. Brad Hauser took the loss for Lawrence.

Lawrence wraps up its series with St. Norbert on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Mel Nicks Field in De Pere.
